Loans at JMT SACCO

Affordable Access to Credit. Responsible Borrowing. Stronger Financial Futures.

Helping Members Grow Through Responsible Loans

At Jinja Mafubira Teachers' Savings and Credit Cooperative Society (JMT SACCO), we believe that a good loan should help a member move forward, not create unnecessary financial pressure.

Our lending approach is designed to support eligible members who need financing for business development, household financial planning, education, agriculture and other approved purposes.

We encourage borrowers to take loans they can comfortably repay while continuing to meet their family and business responsibilities.

Our guiding principle: Borrow for a purpose. Use the money wisely. Repay responsibly.

1. Loan Products and Purposes

JMT SACCO provides information on lending opportunities based on members' financial needs, repayment capacity and the SACCO's approved credit policy.

The following are potential loan categories. Their availability, limits and conditions must be confirmed with JMT SACCO before application.

Business and Working Capital Loans

For eligible traders, shopkeepers, market vendors and small business owners seeking financing to increase stock, purchase business supplies, acquire equipment or expand income-generating activities.

The loan amount and repayment arrangement should reflect the business's actual cash flow.

Salary-Based Loans

For eligible teachers, education workers and other salaried members who can demonstrate reliable income and sufficient disposable earnings to meet repayments.

Approval depends on verified income, existing financial obligations and JMT SACCO's lending requirements.

Agricultural Loans

For eligible members engaged in farming and agricultural enterprises.

The proposed repayment schedule should consider production cycles, harvesting periods, market conditions and expected income.

Education and School Fees Loans

For eligible members seeking financing to meet approved education-related expenses.

Borrowers must demonstrate a reliable source of repayment beyond the educational need itself.

Other Approved Member Loans

Members may enquire about financing for other legitimate purposes, subject to JMT SACCO's approved products, lending limits and credit assessment.

Important: Not every loan category listed above is necessarily currently available. JMT SACCO staff will confirm which products are open for applications.

2. Who Can Apply for a Loan?

Loan applications are assessed according to JMT SACCO's membership requirements and credit policy.

Generally, an applicant should be prepared to:

  • Meet the SACCO's membership and eligibility requirements.

  • Provide accurate identification and contact information.

  • Explain the purpose of the loan.

  • Demonstrate a reliable source of income or business cash flow.

  • Disclose existing loans and financial commitments.

  • Provide the required guarantors or security, where applicable.

  • Agree to the repayment schedule and loan conditions.

  • Complete the required credit appraisal.

Being a JMT SACCO member does not automatically guarantee loan approval.

3. How Much Can You Borrow?

At JMT SACCO, the amount a member requests is not necessarily the amount they should receive.

Every application is assessed using the 5 Cs of Credit.

Character — Will you repay?

We consider repayment discipline, honesty, previous loan performance and reliability.

Capacity — Can you afford the repayments?

We examine income, business turnover, expenses, household responsibilities and other loan commitments.

Capital — What is your own financial contribution?

For business loans, we consider the member's own investment and the extent to which the business depends on borrowed money.

Collateral — What acceptable security is available?

Depending on the loan, security may include eligible savings, guarantors or other approved collateral.

Conditions — What could affect your repayment?

We consider market conditions, business seasonality, employment stability, agricultural cycles and other relevant risks.

JMT SACCO will not encourage a member to borrow more than their verified repayment capacity can reasonably support.

4. Loan Application Requirements

Applicants may be asked to provide:

  1. A completed loan application form.

  2. Acceptable proof of identity.

  3. Membership or account details.

  4. Information about employment or business activities.

  5. Evidence of income, sales or business cash flow.

  6. Details of existing debts and regular expenses.

  7. The intended purpose of the loan.

  8. Guarantor information, where required.

  9. Collateral documents, where applicable.

  10. Any additional information reasonably necessary for appraisal.

The exact documents depend on the loan product and the applicant's circumstances.

5. Loan Repayment Periods

JMT SACCO encourages repayment arrangements that match the borrower's income pattern.

For example, a market trader who earns money regularly may be better suited to frequent repayments than a farmer whose income depends on a seasonal harvest.

Depending on the approved loan product, repayment arrangements may include weekly or other agreed instalments.

Before accepting a loan, members should understand:

  • The amount they will receive.

  • The repayment period.

  • The instalment amount.

  • The payment due dates.

  • The total interest and applicable charges.

  • The consequences of missed or late repayments.

A loan should fit the member's financial capacity, not force the member into repeated borrowing to meet instalments.

6. Loan Interest and How It Is Calculated

Interest is the cost of borrowing money from the SACCO.

JMT SACCO will disclose the applicable interest rate and calculation method before a member signs a loan agreement.

Two common calculation methods are:

Flat-rate interest

Interest is calculated using the original loan principal for the stated period.

Reducing-balance interest

Interest is calculated on the outstanding principal balance as it reduces through repayments.

Example for Understanding Interest

Suppose a member borrows UGX 1,000,000 at an illustrative rate of 2% per month for three months.

Using simple flat-rate interest:

Interest = UGX 1,000,000 × 2% × 3

Total interest = UGX 60,000.

Total repayment = UGX 1,060,000, excluding fees.

Under a reducing-balance method, the total interest would depend on the repayment schedule and outstanding principal.

This is an educational example, not JMT SACCO's advertised interest rate.

Members should request a written repayment schedule showing the actual loan cost before accepting an offer.

7. Loan Fees and Other Charges

Depending on the approved loan product, applicable charges may include loan processing, appraisal, security documentation or other disclosed costs.

Before signing, members should receive a clear explanation of:

  • The approved interest rate.

  • The interest calculation method.

  • Any processing or administrative fees.

  • Any required security-related costs.

  • Any lawful late-payment charges.

  • The total amount payable.

  • Any deductions from the approved loan amount.

JMT SACCO should not apply undisclosed loan charges.

8. Guarantors and Loan Security

Some loans may require one or more acceptable guarantors.

A guarantor is a person who agrees to take responsibility for a borrower's obligations if the borrower fails to repay, to the extent provided in the signed guarantee agreement and applicable law.

Who Can Be a Guarantor?

An acceptable guarantor should:

  • Be properly identified and verified.

  • Understand the responsibility being accepted.

  • Demonstrate financial capacity where required.

  • Disclose relevant existing guarantee obligations.

  • Meet JMT SACCO's guarantor eligibility requirements.

  • Sign the appropriate guarantee documentation voluntarily.

Important for guarantors: Never sign a loan guarantee without understanding the amount, duration, responsibilities and possible consequences.

Guarantors are not simply witnesses. A guarantee can create a real financial obligation.

9. What Happens If You Miss a Repayment?

JMT SACCO encourages borrowers to communicate early whenever repayment difficulties arise.

If a member misses an instalment, the SACCO may contact the borrower to establish the reason and discuss appropriate action under the loan agreement and credit policy.

Continued arrears may lead to additional follow-up, guarantor engagement, approved recovery procedures or other lawful action.

Borrowers should not ignore repayment difficulties.

A good repayment record today can help protect access to credit tomorrow.

However, successful past repayments do not automatically guarantee approval of future loans.

10. Responsible Borrowing: Our Advice to Members

Before taking a loan, ask yourself:

Do I really need this loan?

Will the money help me achieve a useful purpose?

What reliable income will repay it?

Can I still pay school fees, rent, food and other household expenses?

What will happen if my business earns less than expected?

Do I understand the interest, charges and repayment schedule?

A loan should support your progress, not become a burden on your household.
